Blackpool railgrinder 752 was acquired by the MTMS in 2008, with the major construction projects of Lakeside track extension and new depot approaching 752 would play a crucial role, ensuring none of our service cars would have to perform any works duties.
Over the following years, 752 became invaluable for moving parts and materials, towing machinery, and testing new sections of the line regularly. However, due to its sporadic use over the previous few decades, 752 was in poor condition, with a failed motor, rotting timber, and poor wiring. Nevertheless, the car soldiered on reliably until the completion of the Lakeside extension.
In 2011, with the need to house Stockport 5 at Heaton Park and a construction break, 752 was stored outside at the East Lancashire Railway. Although the outdoor storage took a toll on its appearance, assessments carried out upon its return a year later found the railgrinder in remarkable condition given its outdoor ordeal. After a quick paint job, 752 was promptly reactivated.
Once again 752 was the stalwart of Lakeside depots construction, helping to lay the track fan and becoming the first tramcar into the building and to the end of each line.
In 2015, concerns about the remaining motor and wiring prompted the withdrawal of 752 from service. The railgrinder has since been in storage at Lakeside, extracted under tow only for special events.
In mid-2020, 752 was transferred to Middleton Road Depot for a thorough assessment of its motors and wiring. The results led to the launch of a fundraising appeal in 2021 for the car's restoration. With the requisite funds secured, preparatory work is underway to lift 752 off its truck, allowing both motors to be overhauled. The bodywork and rewiring will be performed at Lakeside depot, providing the workshop space at Middleton Road for a more in-depth project.
